Seaside: Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting

Even though it rained cats and dogs (!!!) all day long, Marilyn and I decided NOT to skip attending the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting in Seaside, Oregon this evening. We bundled up and headed out, ready to brave the elements. (Yes, I've been fighting off a cold -- and doing pretty well, so far. But what the heck -- we wanted to go. We're very into participating in local activities -- which is part of the fun of having a house here, after all.)

We had on good jackets with hoods (our blue and black festival jackets from a couple years back), so we were good to go.

There was a decent turnout of people, too, believe it or not! It was raining when we first got there, but then it cleared up and stopped entirely. Plus it was a pretty mild evening, in spite of the constant day-long storm.

The parade was illuminated and short -- which is probably perfect, considering everyone is outside and it was a miracle there was no rain. (smile) We got there around 7:00 and by 7:30 the parade was over. The tree lighting happened shortly after. We stood around in a large group near what everybody was calling the 'Charlie Brown tree' (it got damaged earlier this week during the storm -- it was knocked over by the wind). The crowd sang four songs with enthusiasm (if not much musicality). We were doing a countdown backwards from five and only made it to three when the lights went on! Everybody laughed like crazy! We shook hands with strangers and wished one another Happy Holidays and then it was over.

Marilyn greeted the woman from Pacific Power -- Sheila -- who was there speaking as one of the parade sponsors (Marilyn knows her from festival interactions). We each had a glow stick (Marilyn's was green -- mine was red), and we wore them as we headed off for ice cream. Then we walked down to the turnaround to see the ocean and eat our treat, before finally heading back to the car and home again.

We did go to a movie last night, by the way! We saw "Skyfall," which we both LOVED -- and which was far better than either of us had expected (even though we'd been hearing nothing but good things about the film). I'd highly recommend it, even if you're not a James Bond fan -- but especially if you are a fan! It may well be the BEST of all the Bond films (and, yes, Marilyn and I are lifelong fans -- one of the first adult novels I ever read in my life was a Bond book...).

Directly after the movie we went to the Seaside mall for the Black Friday sales. We'd been told they were opening at midnight, but they were open earlier than that, for sure. We got some AMAZING buys at the Jones New York store -- and bought some things at Claire's and a kitchen store, too. We went in a couple other places, but didn't buy anything. It was very relaxing, compared to shopping in Portland, with hardly anyone there to speak of.

As for today, Marilyn didn't take her usual walk because of the heavy rain all day. I wouldn't have gone along anyway, because I didn't want to risk it. I may avoid a full-blown cold, if I'm careful.

I wore jeans tonight that were too long (???) for me. I'd picked an older pair, because of the potential of getting soaked (and wanting to be able to change to my other jeans when we got home). They got really wet for several inches at the bottom, so I was glad to get out of them when we got back! That was really the only discomfort, though, because the weather was very kind to us while we were outside...

The rest of the day was quiet. We read, played on our iPads and watched TV (including some Bond movies on cable). Very RELAXING.

Our friend Rosanna got bad news today about her father. Our prayers are with both of them and we'd appreciate good thoughts and prayers to be sent their way... Thanks!
