Actually, I finished it several days back, but never posted about it.
I finally understand what all the fuss is about in HP fandom. That book was... well... awful.
Okay, maybe awful is strong. It's not necessarily written any worse than Rowling's previous HP books. But as a woman who has been single my entire life -- by choice, mind you -- I found all the pairing up especially annoying and offensive. (Obviously in the HP world a woman must have a man to make her life complete. Yes, that is me retching that you hear right now! With no offense to any friends who have made the decision to be in a male/female commitment, mind you...)
I wasn't that upset about the death of Dumbledore. I happen to feel death is an important and realistic part of life, personally. So that didn't upset me.
But the fact that Snape killed him? And that Snape is now an out-and-out bad guy? Awful. Just awful.
As a far-from-skinny person, I'm more than a little tired of the fact that Rowling clearly feels FAT people are all either BAD people, or weak and lazy people. (Thanks for reinforcing that myth, J.K.)
Gosh, I can't imagine what teenagers think about if they're not focusing on romance all the time! For the record, I wasn't 'boy crazy' in school. I had my moments, certainly, but I had a lot of other things to focus on, as well. Call me silly, but I'd like to think that intelligent young people really do have other things to focus on. (And that romance doesn't color each and every aspect of their lives!) That's just... wrong. Appalling! Ugh.
I could go on, but won't bother. I guess we've stopped trusting in the wisdom of Dumbledore now that he's dead, by the way. So much for bothering to create a character of depth, wisdom and AGE, who appeared to know more than the children did about the world we live in...
Okay, I'm going to keep on going if I don't stop right now! (grin)
My book from Sue about nuns who eventually left their order was far more entertaining and satisfying, I'm afraid. What a disappointment!
