Dad's 90th Birthday...

Today is my Dad's birthday (he died in 1998). He would have been 90 today.

Marilyn, sister Sue and I went to Seaside, Oregon today -- and had a great time! We had wonderful chatting on the way down and back. We played Fascination and laughed our asses off (Sue was sooooo witty). Then we had a nice dinner, too. Fun, fun!

On the way home, we could see SMOKE in the sky over North Portland as we were headed for the St. Johns bridge. We grew up in St. Johns, and we felt concerned, as it was clear this was a fire somewhere in that area.

Anyway, we chased the fire and followed it to Shamrock's, still a local market, though much changed from our childhood days. Back then it was the local store, a combination grocery and pharmacy that we loved! The memories are THICK when we talk about those days, believe me. It was hard knowing the place was destroyed today...

Here are a few photos. We couldn't get really close, and it was starting to get dark when we got there...

There's a YouTube video of the fire HERE (it's really short).

While chasing the fire, we were forced off streets and at one point actually ended up on the street where we lived as kids (!!!). Marilyn kept mentioning how narrow the streets were and how small the front yards were. They seemed much bigger way back when. (smile)

At the house 'down the street' from 'our' house, an elderly woman came out her door. Both Marilyn and I immediately recognized Wanda, who we used to refer to as Wanda, the Wicked Witch. Which reminds me of a story from when we were teens...

Across the street from Wanda was a house where Jimmy (a close friend) used to live. Later, the twins lived there -- and when I was 10, I used to babysit them (and their baby sister).

In the summer, our parents allowed Marilyn and me to play outside really late -- until midnight (and sometimes even later). It was totally safe, as everyone knew everyone else -- and all the kids played in all the yards. Well, ALMOST all the yards! Not in Wanda's yard! For some reason, Wanda never liked either Marilyn or me. I guess we were the ringleaders for all the kids, so maybe that was reason enough. Frankly, we were GOOD kids, and almost never in any trouble. But Wanda didn't like kids all that much, period.

Anyway, I'm digressing. I want to tell about one night when all the kids were inside -- except for the two of us. The twins were home alone, and Wanda was watching them from her house across the street. Marilyn and I were out prowling around. We snuck down to their house and went to the far side windows, where Wanda couldn't see us. We were talking to the twins, and for some reason got the bright idea to sneak into their house!

They passed a chair down to us, and we used it to climb in through their bedroom window!

No sooner did we get inside than Wanda came in through the front door to check on the twins. So they had us hide inside their closet, which was a long closet against one wall. Marilyn was in one part and I was in another, barely daring to breathe.

It was like a TV show! I'm not kidding. Wanda came in the room and was immediately suspicious! She started questioning the twins to find out why they were laughing when she came in the house. At one point she suggested the girls needee pillows, so she headed for the closet (!!!), but they managed to convince her that they didn't need them, just in time!

Finally Wanda left, and we came out of the closet and all four of us were laughing, but nervous. We thought about climbing back out the window, but while it worked to climb up, going down wasn't working. Finally we went into the kitchen and snuck out the back door. Then we worked our way back to our own end of the street without letting Wanda see us.

We hadn't really done anything all that bad, but we felt pretty lucky to get off without getting caught! I don't think we ever told our parents about the incident, and I've no idea what they would have done if they'd known. But it was a great adventure, and I'm still glad we did it! (grin)

And sometime I should share some memories of Shamrock's... It may be gone now, but it's still standing (and much nicer than the last several decades) in my head.
