78th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition Winners

I got a large envelope in the mail today, with a return address of fw (F+W PUBLICATIONS, INC.). My reaction? "What the hell is this?" (I even spoke the words out loud.) You might remember me talking about submitting my work HERE (back in June). Well, believe it or not, I won an Honorable Mention -- and the envelope was a letter and certificate informing me of that fact. The news was just posted today at the website, so I think it's amazing that they got the mail to me same-day.

Here's how the letter to me read:

Dear Charlie:

One of my most enjoyable tasks as editor of Writer's Digest is passing along good news to writers. This is one of those fun occasions. It is my pleasure to tell you that your manuscript, Get A Cat, has been awarded Honorable Mention in the Mainstream/Literary Short Story category of the 78th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition. Enclosed is your Certificate of Achievement to honor your accomplishment.

Receiving an Honorable Mention is an accomplishment you can be proud of. Your success in the face of such formidable competition speaks highly of your writing talent, and should be a source of great pride as you continue in your writing career.

I congratulate you again on your accomplishment, and wish you the best of luck in your future writing.

Respectfully,

Jessica Strawser, Editor

Writer's Digest

Seriously, you could have knocked me over with a feather -- this was a total surprise! I'd actually forgotten all about the contest. The certificate is cool -- certainly suitable for framing, so I'll probably do just that. (smile) It's a great motivation to write MORE. I've been waffling a little about NaNo, but I think I'd better stop that right now and get serious. Well, as I'm always saying to the members of our Writing Circle, if you don't try, you can't win. Yes, it's an Honorable Mention, but that's out of more than 13,000 participants, so I'm feeling pretty amazed and proud tonight. And, yes, humble, too...

By the way, if not for Marilyn mistressmarilyn, I'd never have entered, so many, many thanks to her. She's always my number one fan and supporter. I'm so lucky to have her to encourage and help me as a writer.

I have so many writing friends here at LiveJournal. I'll simply say that I strongly encourage you to put your work out there. It can't hurt, after all.

(So I'll probably share the story at some point, now that the competition has ended. I just need to dig it out and post it...)
