Breaking News: President Bush Pats Himself on the Back???

I turned on the TV at 7:00 a.m. this morning to see 'Breaking News' running non-stop across the bottom of the screen. Wow! It must be something really exciting -- right?

Wrong.

Listening, I got to hear President Bush patting himself on the back about Iraq (yet again). Apparently in all around 8,000 U.S. forces will be coming back -- and it looks like one Marine battalion (numbering about 1,000 troops) will go home on schedule in November and not be replaced.

To put this into perspective, keep in mind that there are around 146,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. We're not even talking about 10%, so I don't see any point in making a big deal out of it! The following should make it a bit more clear:

quotes left  The President's plan to reduce force levels in Iraq may seem to signal movement in the right direction, but it really defers troop reductions until the next administration," said the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Representative Ike Skelton (D-Mo). "More significant troop reductions in Iraq are needed so that we can start to rebuild U.S. military readiness and provide the additional forces needed to finish the fight in Afghanistan."

Said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: "I am stunned that President Bush has decided to bring so few troops home from Iraq and send so few resources to Afghanistan.  quotes right

I don't get political very often in my blog, but I felt so disgusted by this that I couldn't keep myself from mentioning it. (Happily, I didn't vote for the man...)

This nation is (finally) ready to face the VOTE for a new President. I'm hopeful we won't be putting a Bush clone into the White House, but the citizens of the United States are their own worst enemies, I'm afraid. (sigh)

Mr. President? No amount of 'spin' will deceive those who bother to be the least bit informed about what's going on with Iraq. And while I'm sure we'd all love an excuse to 'party' about the war, you seem to be doing enough of that all by yourself. Hey, just because you say you're doing a great job, that doesn't make it so. (I know that game. And I've seen it work! But maybe it's done better when the end result isn't so entirely self-serving...)

I can only imagine how bad Americans look to the rest of the world at times like this...
