Viewing the Perseids Meteor Shower at Stonehenge!

Another year, another viewing. (smile)

Marilyn mistressmarilyn and I were joined by Mitch and Jessica to go and see the Perseids meteor shower up at Stonehenge (in Washington state, at Maryhill).

(You'll often see this Stonehenge replica referred to as a 'war monument,' which is true, but Sam Hill was quite a pacifist -- he was a Quaker -- so this is as much a monument to PEACE as it is a war monument...)

You'll recall that we DID THIS last year (in 2007), too. (Though I never did manage to share photos... sigh...)

Again, such an amazing experience!!!

Unfortunately there's no way to take photos of the incredible night sky with my camera -- and mere words can't begin to describe what it looks like! It would be wonderful to see the view aside from the Perseids meteor shower. It really makes you understand what it was like for man to gaze at the stars in the days before modern man lit up the night...

Last year there were TONS of people there at Stonehenge, so we'd expected that to be true this year, too. But we were completely ALONE, believe it or not! It was just the four of us, so though we had our chairs, we had plenty of room to all lie on the 'altar stone' (side by side) to watch for meteors. (I've no clue why no one else was there in a spot that's so great to view -- on the best night for viewing! But it was delightful to have the place entirely to ourselves...)

It's amazingly dark there, which was especially true after the moon went down (around 2 a.m.). Knowing that the 'perfect' viewing time would be between 2:00 a.m. and dawn, we left the house at 11:30 p.m. (August 11, in other words) -- and ended up there around 1:30 a.m.

Yes. This did mean that Marilyn had to drive all the way there and back with no sleep (she'd been unable to nap earlier in the day) -- only to get home and turn around to head to work. She had a 7:30 a.m. meeting in the office! We were pretty tired by the end of what was a long and busy work day (!!!), but it was certainly worth it...
