Automobile Accident

We were headed to our manicure appointment today and a guy ran a stop sign and hit us. Marilyn mistressmarilyn was going the speed limit of 30 (she just happened to have looked at this right before the accident occurred, as a matter of fact), but this guy was going pretty fast.

She swerved to try and miss him. If he'd been paying attention (he was on his cell phone at the time), he might have swerved in time. The sound of the crash was horrible. The first words out of mouth -- aimed at him as I stared through the windshield -- were, "You had a stop!"

I jumped out of the car after we'd stopped and the man who came after us in a van immediately pulled along side us and asked me if I was okay. I don't know what my face must have looked like, because he actually drove on then came back to ask me again if I was doing okay...

Marilyn was calm and cool -- a total rock. I was pretty shook up, but I don't think I babbled or anything. (smile)

The guy jumped out of his car and immediately admitted it was all his fault and asked if we were okay. Then he convinced us to follow him home to his house to exchange info, which we did. He seemed decent and sincere at the time.

Of course, we've been there, done that!

So I shouldn't have been so bitter when Marilyn was talking to our insurance person and it was clear his story had changed -- and I called him 'a lying little prick.' Bad language, I know. Sorry! But I was furious and disappointed.

As Marilyn says, we really want to believe the best of people. But so often they live down to their worst potential, like this guy did today.

Turns out he has liability only (car insurance is required by law in the state of Oregon -- not that everyone obeys that law), so insurance wasn't going to cover the damage to his car.

The good news is that we weren't hurt and the car seems to be not that bad, considering. I'd expected to get out and find that it was totalled, but because Marilyn swerved we only struck with the right front bumper pointing into the front of his car. Our headlight was smashed, but still works. The turn signal is shot. And it's hard to know what other damage may have taken place, such as to the frame and so on.

The Farmers insurance woman made it clear that this guy is bad news, though. He's out of wheels and after us to pick up the tab. Get this: he drove straight through another stop sign on our way following him back to his house! And was on the cell driving there, too.

So we'd hoped to go for a drive after getting our nails down, but that was blown to hell. We had to go through filing an accident report and all the other crap, which took until past 4:00 p.m.

It was another lovely, sunny autumn day here -- and my first real day out since I've been sick with this flu. But what the hell, it certainly could have been much more serious! We're both fine (though my back and neck were bothering me a bit, I'm sure it's nothing) and our car is driveable.

We're going to use the same auto repair people as last time -- when the guy pulled across two lanes of traffic into Marilyn and lied and tried to claim it was her fault. (He had a passenger as a witness and they still found against that guy, by the way.) At least I'm a witness if it comes to that. There weren't really any cars right around us on impact -- though we should have asked some of those people who drove by after what they'd seen, I guess. (sigh) You live, you learn.

Marilyn made a joke about 'siccing Tom on him' (the asshole, I mean). Hey, I have a hunch that's the last thing that guy would want, by the way...

And, no -- neither of us is superstitious. We didn't know it was Friday the 13th until someone else pointed it out to us and we don't think that had a damn thing to do with the accident.

Oh. And something's wrong with our damn network modem! It keeps needing to be recycled and dumping our connection to online. And that's about the height of something...

Anyway, it takes a lot to really get us down -- and this ain't it, folks!

We're now going to have a bite to eat (yes, at midnight) and watch more TV...site stats
