An aside: I'd forgotten that my 'sad' icon is Roger Federer crying -- I guess because I don't use it all that often. (Ironically, Roger lost at Wimbledon today...)
Marilyn and I were at work before 7:00 a.m. this morning.
Anyway, we did a major re-organization at the festival today, which meant laying off four members of our Staff (Hailey, Pam, Paul and Peter). I've had far too many occasions to use the festival-layoffs tag in my blog. (sigh)
As I said back in 2008: People are amazing. They're strong. They're good. I saw that again today.
I feel so bad for Marilyn and Jeff, who had to actually give this news to these people. Laying people off is a hard task. My own role was to take each person and help them get what they needed off their computers (if anything) and hang around while they packed up their belongings. Ashley helped by doing this with Pam, as I was tied up with Hailey at that point, and then Paul.
Peter has worked here for 12 years (on and off), so that was especially hard. These are ALL quality people that we're close to. So, yeah, It hurts to tell them they no longer have jobs.
I know they'll all be okay. And I'm praying for them as I type this -- trying hard not to cry. Marilyn and I both did cry in her office at one point. It's pretty hard to avoid, considering how emotional this is.
I know the re-organization will make us work smarter. When your Staff decreases in size, you have to come up with ways to get the job done better. I believe we're up to the task.
It was hard on the Seasonal employees and Interns, as this was their last day. They'd been hoping for a fun day with all of us, but this was not a fun office today, I'm afraid. I guess it was another learning experience for them...
I really don't have more to say now. I've got piles of work, so I should get back to it. This is going to be a busy summer.
