Let It Snow? I Guess So!

Snow in Portland!!!

I've used my 'snowman' icon for this, but this is very, very DRY snow -- so it won't pack for snowballs or snowmen, I'm afraid.

The flakes were small and dusting -- but the ICE was serious business. Both the mayor and mayor-elect of Portland asked that nobody go out unless they did essential work today. And it was against the law to be outside without chains on your car.

Portland is NOT snow city. People don't know how to drive in snow here. People don't know how to walk in the snow here. One of the reasons we live here is because we don't get snow! (grin)

Anyway, we stayed inside, for the most part!

Snow in Portland - Dec 14, 2008
Here's a shot of the snow from the porch
of our house -- because I'm not stepping
too far outside, considering how COLD it
is! (In the 20's, believe it or not...)

Snow under the lilac bush
Here's the snow under the lilac bush in
the back yard. I had to go outside to fill
the hummingbird feeder (it was frozen) and
to put hot water in the make-shift birdbath.

The hummingbird feeder has to be changed out about once an hour, as it freezes solid after time. And they were outside like mad, hungry (thirsty?) and suffering from this cold. Our local hummingbirds don't leave during winter -- but they're used to our mild winters!

I took my friend June's advice and turned the top of the birdbath upside down. I didn't want it to freeze with water inside and break! But I put a plastic container there (with an old hand-weight inside to hold it), then filled it with hot water for the birds to drink.

I was out of seed (we forgot to get it when shopping!!!), so Jim brought some over for me -- wasn't that nice? I offered to buy him a bag to replace, but he said no.

I'm thinking I'll use the old table umbrella to make a bird 'shelter' (I've made these from regular umbrellas in the past, among other things) tomorrow...

Marilyn mistressmarilyn and I had planned to take a walk in the snow, but it was just too damn cold!

This NEVER happens (seriously), but they've already announced that schools will be CLOSED in Portland tomorrow. Once Portland schools closed, all the other local schools started to do the same. This makes a TON of sense, but I'm still amazed they did it. Normally you have to wait until around 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. day-of to find out if schools are closed...

Anyway, we had a lovely day of relaxing and playing Zuma (among other things) -- and watching TV news all day long, focusing on the weather. (We've become such news junkies, I have to admit.)

Marilyn is currently napping (I think -- she's down in the family room, so I'm only guessing). I'm thinking of lying down to read and nap myself.

We might put up the upstairs tree tonight, though there's no rush. We have tomorrow to do it, after all. We'd have Monday off anyway this time of year, but I'm glad for everyone else at work! I wonder what it's going to be like to drive to work on Tuesday... (???)
cozy, colin kitty cozy

Sleepy Cat!

I just snapped a picture of Colin on the chair beside me. It's turned to face me, and he sort of came and rubbed against me, before jumping up on the chair and going to sleep.

Normally Colin isn't one to sleep in the office much, so it's a sign he was also looking for some attention, sweet boy. The photo isn't all that different from the one I used to make the icon I'm using here ('Cozy'), though for the icon he was lying on the sofa, and I took it out and made a custom background...

Colin on Marilyn's chair, Dec. 14, 2008
Colin is all COZY, sleeping on Marilyn's mistressmarilyn
chair (in front of her office computer), right next to me. Happily
he didn't get TOO upset when I disturbed his rest by taking
some photos! (smile) The pink blanket is used by Marilyn to
wrap up when it gets too cold in our office...

I've recently decided I don't share nearly enough photos here, so I'm going to try and improve and post more!

Colin is so black that you can hardly make out his head and paws in the picture! I think it's interesting that his claws were out -- I think he was dreaming, because he was making some noises...
