Good (Long) Day!

I just woke up from my 'nap' -- and almost tumbled right back to bed. Then I remembered that it's Wednesday night (early Thursday) -- meaning garbage and recycling night. (sigh)

Happily, I've done the cat boxes. (woo hoo) And I took out all the garbage created today (which was a ton), too. I've rinsed out all the TONS of glass bottles (beer and hard lemonade) -- these are on the kitchen counter, ready to be put out. I've got the empty water bottles ready for the recycling bin, as well.

But I need to gather all the rest of the garbage and recycling in the house -- and haven't even started that! Most of what I've done we don't even normally have, after all!

No photos from today to share -- my bad! But we skipped our normal Staff meeting on Tuesday, and told everyone to come out this afternoon to our house, instead. Let's see if I can remember who all showed: Rich, Jessica, Jeff, deShauna, Jodi, Mandy, Christie, Madhu, Megan, Amy and Kathii. (Plus Marilyn mistressmarilyn and me, of course.) I just realized that made 13 of us (!!!) -- but I guess we can count the cats, too: Colin and Henry. Admittedly, though Henry was there with us the whole time, Colin was a bit of a whimp -- he didn't stay most of the time. Anyway, counting the cats brings our total to 15. (I'm not sure why I kept thinking we'd end up with 20, but that didn't happen...)

Sara was gone (out of state) on vaca, so obviously she couldn't make it. (She's going home to a mother who needs surgery and a dying grandparent, so that's not much of a vacation!) We'd thought both Carol and Peter (who are both on vaca, too) might come, but they didn't show. (I honestly don't blame them -- plus Carol is actually sick.) I can't remember who else I'd thought might come, but it doesn't matter, as I think I've listed the whole crew. So our deck was packed with people! (And I think a good time was had by all.)

Marilyn came home early to help me 'get ready' for everyone. I'd spent over an hour just trimming the roses in the corner of the back yard. I did quite a bit of other stuff out there, too. And I made our lawn guys come early so they could get done and be out of there in plenty of time.

Then I had to pick up around the house a bit! I didn't bother to vacuum or dust, though. What the hell, we were outside almost the entire time.

Again I'm struck by how GENEROUS Marilyn is. We ran out to Freddies to get 'snacks' for everyone -- to the tune of more than $100. (And that doesn't include all the booze, soda, water, cold cuts, etc. that we already had at home and used.) She doesn't plan to turn this in for the festival to pay for, because this little party (er... Staff meeting) was on HER. Well, it's 'only money' (as they say). (And who knows what the future will bring? Yes, much of the talk today was about possible layoffs, in light of the festival finances. But it was still fun, even so.)

We ended up with fruit, veggies, tons and tons of chips and dips, cold cuts and cheese -- plus a Mexican dip platter. There was enough food for every person to make a meal twice over -- and then some! (We sent a ton of it home with Jodi after.) And there's dips we didn't even open still... Plus all the taco chips we bought, huge bags of Ruffles and so on. Food everywhere!

I did get my bathroom relatively clean (!!!), and the living room was picked up -- as was the kitchen. I'm proud of our home (little or not) -- and our yard is very nice for guests! Not, perhaps, as big as many yards, but the deck was shady on what was a lovely, hot summer day. And there was a good breeze, too.

I'd planned to go by June's when I got up from my nap, but I was so tired out that it didn't happen. She did get her own Flip video camera (the pink one) -- and an USB hub port, too. (Her computer -- like mine -- doesn't have any USB ports in front. So it makes it easier to have the hub to plug the Flip into.) Originally she got just the USB cord, but I talked her into the hub. It's handy for other devices you need to plug in and out (like Jump Drives!).

I want to give her a little 'lesson' in using it, though she could probably reason it out for herself. Anyway, I think she'll enjoy it as much as I do!

I'm out of Starbucks (boo hoo), but am likely to remain that way for now, I think. That's a whole different story, so I'll save it for another time... (sigh)

Well, I've rambled (stalled?) long enough. I need to get this work done so I can get to bed! Henry is crashed on Marilyn's chair beside me in the office. Today wore the cats out! (smile)

Tomorrow is another busy day. I've got a TON of website stuff I need to tackle right now. (New pages that need adding.) And I need to check some Sponsor Audit-related stats (etc.), too. So it would be nice to have some (rested) 'brain power' when I get up!

I think I'll decidedly need to put out an extra bag of garbage, after everything from today. But that's cool! Marilyn never seems to mind the extra expense, anyway. (Again, she's generous as hell, even when she can't afford to be. I love that about her!)

Happily, she's been posting to her blog again recently (happy dance), and hopes to keep that up, too. I'm so glad!

I need to note that with Jeff's bday approaching, I decided to give him a 2 gig Jump Drive as a gift. That's seriously a sign of how much I like him, as I'd never part with one otherwise! (smile) He thought it would be perfect for keeping 'confidential' material, so he doesn't need to put that on our Server at work...

Well, stalling is over! Hopefully I'll write more tomorrow. (I still need to catch up things I failed to post before... sigh...)

i hate microsoft, hate microsoft

I Hate Microsoft.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know it's a mantra with me. I know my anti-Microsoft rants drive some people to drink. I've got that. Okay. Still...

I HATE Microsoft.

I just had to revisit THIS ISSUE again this morning. (sigh)

This time it was on Marilyn's mistressmarilyn computer. She'd installed Silverlight in order to watch some Olympics (tennis?) on her computer. (She's miffed with the damn NBC coverage issue -- as am I -- and was seeking a way around it.)

For the record, I REFUSE to link the Silverlight page at Microsoft. Frankly, I'm not linking Microsoft, either. Be warned that installing Silverlight will take control of your Update settings on your Windows-driven computers (another reason for you Mac users to rejoice) -- I suggest you check those settings immediately if you decide to install it.

Regardless of Microsoft's attempts to keep users from using Zone Alarm (an excellent software application), I will be continuing to employ it on my computer. Stupid me, I'd hoped Microsoft would officially address and correct this problem, but plainly they haven't -- and don't intend to!

Marilyn actually woke me up this morning telling me I needed to fix her computer.

And aside from not being able to connect to the internet, something else strange was going on. Her Active Desktop kept turning off for no good reason, making it impossible to see her wallpaper. I wonder why?

Look, I get it that Microsoft wants to rule the world -- at least, they want to rule the world of computers, which in this day and age is pretty much ruling the world, as far as I'm concerned. But when they use methods that change the settings you've personally selected for your own computer? That's just WRONG.

When Marilyn installed Silverlight -- which she says is pretty damn cool, by the way -- it took her Update settings entirely to AUTOMATIC. They 'recommend' this setting (surprise!), which not only downloads any Updates, but then installs these, as well -- without you ever getting to review any of them.

If a computer reboot (restart) is needed, it will automatically do that, too -- without allowing you to confirm or deny.

People, what's wrong with this picture???

What amazes me is that other PC/Windows users aren't as angry and upset about this as I am... Seriously!

Marilyn admitted (yet again) that she probably wouldn't be able to even be on the internet if I weren't around. Or at least it would cost her some $$$ to have 'experts' come out to fix things for her...

Now how ridiculous is that?

Microsoft has made computers more and more difficult for the average person. But anyone can see why that is to their advantage, surely! Year after year I've watched this CRAP with growing concern and total shock at their audacity.

Question: Who do they think they are?

Answer: The future ruler of the world (I'm sure).

Always nice to start my day cursing the computer -- then ranting about it in my blog! (heh)

pissed off, caesar pissed off

F-ing Cellphones...

Look, I love it if you're a person who prefers to use a cellphone to a land phone. That's cool by me. It really is.

But if you don't keep that phone on 24/7, then how in HELL is someone going to contact you? Especially in, say, an emergency?

Okay, I rarely have 'emergencies' that require reaching someone, but you never know, right?

I'm just feeling a tad annoyed today, I guess. (sigh)

I've been waiting to talk to Tom, so my cell rings and I can't reach it in time -- and guess who was calling me? You got it.

I thought he'd left me a message -- because I get the sound for a message as I'm trying to call him back. His cell is TURNED OFF (WTF?), so I leave him a short message and say I'll go listen to his message. Of course, I can't do that, because the message was from someone else. He didn't leave me one.

Why is that?

So by now I'm highly annoyed and try to phone him again. My second message was pissed, which he didn't deserve, I'm sure. But I was too annoyed by then to be reasonable...

You know, I really wanted to talk to him. That's what's got me so bugged at this moment. (sigh) I was busy yesterday and missed his call -- and it's been ages since we connected...

So, a cellphone can be a great thing -- or a royal pain in the ass. If they aren't on, then we're back to the days BEFORE TELEPHONES, in my humble opinion. Now you tell me, how does THAT suck?

On that note, I have a pile of WORK to do (mostly website and Sponsor Audit stats), need to get a shower and wash my hair and Sister Sue wants to come by at some point with Nicole, so...

I need to post just about Tom at some point. I'm not sure what I want to say, exactly. I'm trying to get my head around it. Tom is one of my best friends -- and I want that to remain true forever. But I'm worried about it right now, whether I have cause for concern or not. (sigh)

Well, having just been a royal bitch to him probably didn't help that (grin), but that's how it goes... I never claimed to be perfect.

And being unable to reach someone when you really want to is annoying beyond belief!

By the way, it's not like HE doesn't have alternative phone numbers for reaching ME -- both our home land line and my work phone.

no way--harry

Harry Potter Movie Release Pushed Way Back (WTF?)

Wow. Sorry to hear that the greedy Warner Bros. studio execs feel they need more $$$ from a summer release and have pushed the movie back from November 2008 to July 2009 -- and I quote:

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it had decided to make the change to bolster its release schedule for the lucrative summer moviegoing season -- a period that can account for as much as 40 percent of Hollywood's annual box office receipts.

Warner Bros. President Alan Horn said the studio was also still feeling repercussions from the three-month Hollywood screenwriters strike that ended in February but has "impacted the readiness of scripts for other films."

"We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family ... release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment," Horn said.

(You can read the full article HERE.)

I've been reading some reactions where people seem to feel this will somehow improve the quality of the movie -- but I simply don't see how. If the thing is already done (which it appears to be), then all we're talking about is timing the release to potentially make more $$$ for Warner Bros.

Or am I missing something?

The trailers have already been out, so personally I've assumed the movie is ready to go. And nothing that's being said seems to reflect differently...

By the way, there's no proof that the movie will do better with a July release -- is there? Haven't all the Harry Potter movies done well when released? I guess it's all about those first day (and first weekend) numbers now for movies. And defining a success by whether it breaks records.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm not disappointed by the additional wait time, because I am.

But after all, Warner Bros. has said:

The studio said the change of date would not alter production plans for the final, two-part Potter movie adventure, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The release date for part one is tentatively set for November 2010.

And we should believe them WHY?
