Wikipedia Birthday Meme (December 4)

Yes, I did the Wikipedia Birthday Meme! (Gacked from Marilyn mistressmarilyn and kellygreen and many others.) This is a great meme! You should all do it! (Yes, consider it an order!)

Wikipedia Birthday Meme
Go to Wikipedia. Type in your birthday (month and day). List three events, two births and one death.

Well, I guess I didn't read it too carefully! (yikes) I did three for everything -- 'events,' 'births,' 'deaths' -- plus 'holidays and observances'! (grin)

Wikipedia Birthday Meme (December 4)

1952 - Great Smog of 1952: A cold fog descends upon London, combining with air pollution and killing up to 12,000 in the weeks and months that follow.

I picked that one because that was the actual year I was born -- and I'd never even heard of the 'Great Smog of 1952' before!

1867 - Former Minnesota farmer Oliver Hudson Kelley founds the Order of the Patrons of Husbandry (better known today as the Grange movement).

I picked that one because I've always been fascinated by Granges -- and we actually stopped to look at a Grange building today!

1921 - The Virginia Rappe manslaughter trial against Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle ends in a hung jury.

I was always fascinated by the trial of Roscoe Conkling (Fatty) Arbuckle! I feel he was totally screwed over!

1912 - Pappy Boyington, American pilot (d. 1988)

I was always fascinated by Pappy Boyington. (I used to love that TV series, too...)

1921 - Deanna Durbin, Canadian actress and singer

1973 - Tyra Banks, American model

In light of how Marilyn and I love "America's Next Top Model," I found this amusing! (smile)

1123 - Omar Khayyám, Persian poet, astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher (b. 1048)

1334 - Pope John XXII (b. 1249)

Fascinating, as church leaders go...

1679 - Thomas Hobbes, English philosopher (b. 1588)

Really an interesting man with interesting ideas.

holidays and observances

At least I did know that we weren't supposed to do this category at all (grin), but I thought it would be fun to include...

Roman festivals - secret ceremonies in honor of Bona Dea

R.C. Saints - Saint John of Damascus: optional memorial; also Saint Barbara

Be sure to read about Saint Barbara!!! Very interesting stuff. (Especially if you've been in and/or are fascinated with the military...)

Santería, Lukumí - Day of Shango

As I was just saying to Marilyn today, while on our drive down the Washington side of the Gorge highway, it's wonderful to be able to constantly learn new and interesting things... (I love my life!)

Kittie Scarlett is meowing and trilling at my feet. Now she's rubbing against my ankles. Now she's climbed Marilyn's extended legs! (ouch) I've pulled her off and she's curled happily in my lap. She wanted some attention. (We were gone much of the day.)

I went back and added all Marilyn's LJ birthday greetings to my memories. (Fun to keep track of, I think.) I really, really need to catch up my Memories yet again!
