Wayne's Memorial...

Very hot day here in Portland, again. It was supposed to be cooler than yesterday, but I don't think that turned out to be the case... The church was fairly warm, but it wasn't as bad as when we attended the memorial for Kris' mom (miserable -- and Marilyn had that terrible drug rash at the time). All in all not bad today. But this upper 80 and low 90 degree weather is interesting, to say the least.

The service for Wayne started around half an hour late (the sound guy wasn't there, I guess). But that was okay. It ran about an hour, which is perfect, I think.

People spoke very fondly of Wayne. It appears he was far more religious than either Marilyn or I had known. The minister had come from California just to do the service and was a close friend of Wayne's. Many spoke of Wayne's love of Jesus -- and there was a lot of reason to believe this was very much true. Wayne had a large impact on many lives -- and we were far from the only ones thinking how quickly he'd become a close friend...

I must mention that the family made a point of thanking people for their prayers. They spoke of how well they were dealing with this terrible loss -- and how they felt the prayers and support of others was one of the main reasons. And they asked us all to continue to pray for them. But they also asked us to pray for the man who killed Wayne, and for his family. It was very moving, I have to say. Talk about living your religion...

Goodbye, Wayne! (This photo was taken last year on the Fourth of July visit to our beach house.)

Here's a photo of sister Sue's son, Larry with Marilyn. (Obviously Larry is Marilyn's and my nephew.) Larry drove Sue and her friends to the service.

Holly -- Wayne's wife of 12 years -- brought along a bunch of Wayne's souvenirs, asking people to help themselves to a 'piece of Wayne.' He was a huge baseball fan, so I took one of the many baseballs that were there. It was in the display case and signed. The paper that came with it (in Wayne's handwriting) read: "Caught off Jose Lopez - LF. Tacoma (Cheney Stad.) 07-02-05. Signed by Chris Snelling. (Day before he was called up.)"

Here's the photo of the ball:

I plan to take this to our beach house and keep it there as a reminder of Wayne...

I've been online spamming Instagram, which I really love. It's fun how easy it is to 'share' between Instagram and Facebook and/or Twitter. I love Social Media. And my favorite part of Social Media remains LiveJournal blogging and interaction. My friends here are especially important to me...

I love you guys. As we lose friends, it's good to remember how much we love all of our friends -- and to take the time to say it, often. The best part of losing people (and there actually is a good part) is two-fold: You can't lose someone unless you were lucky enough to have them in your life in the first place. (It's worth losing someone to have been able to be close to them.) And there are always more people you can become close to in the future. They don't replace the people we lose, but I think those who pass on would want us to find new people in our lives -- and there are so many people out there we can be close to, if we try.

Wayne was very much there today. And everyone was warm and caring and there was a lot of friendship and love in that church...

I guess it's not goodbye -- but just farewell until we meet again one day. We love you, Wayne!
